Born as Colton Dwyer in Alexandria, Virginia, Jax grew up with what was a relatively non-eventful life. Never a particularly gifted child in any specific subject, he enjoyed sports and exploring in the forests that surrounded his home for hours; had a mother and father that loved him and two older sisters that cared for him and annoyed the hell out of him in equal measure. The biggest change that ever came his way was his decision to join the army only a year out of high school instead of heading to college, stemming from what he’d initially called a sense of obligation to fight for his country, but now thinks was just some excuse to feed the itch inside of him begging for any fight at all; a choice he’d later come to regret for more than one reason. He’d already served a tour when he’d heard rumors of a program being overseen by top brass that was looking for volunteers- some sort of an experimental drug trial, so hush-hush barely anyone had even heard of it except for the ones that had been approached to take part. Ended up, he was to become one of those unlucky few. Of course, he didn’t see it for what it was at first, and despite his initial discomfort he went along with the check-ups and the blood tests and the routine injections of god only knew what every morning like clockwork. But, as time went on and his own body changed, the program took on a more sinister edge. The military wasn’t just interested in the effects of certain drugs on their soldiers' health, they were creating something; killing machines. Attack dogs on leashes that would follow wherever the finger was pointed and eliminate targets with deadly precision, soldiers more powerful than any nation had ever seen before and helpless to anything but their handler’s bidding. No one ever uttered the words out loud, but Jax knew what they were being turned into, whether anyone involved wanted to admit it or not. Werewolves.

Unlike most mainstream media adaptations of the creature, the Subjects grew into the ability to change at will, and they more or less retained their minds in their beast form, though they’re very easily lost to instinct and the innate desire to kill and destroy thanks to the volatility and flaws in the initial experimentation process. These creatures are very, very dangerous and next to impossible to tame and/or control. While they have vague control over their actions during their voluntary shifts, a full moon effectively strips all control away from them and for one night they change, unwillingly, into completely unmanageable, lethal beasts. With no other way to correct this, military officials would lock the Subjects up in high security cages on the night of each full moon until morning dawned and they turned back.As the program progressed and the Subjects ability to shift between forms became more stable, Jax and the others were used as living weapons, sent off on top secret missions (usually under the cover of darkness) to sniff out and effectively erase whatever mark they’d been given off of the face of the earth. He had virtually no true autonomy during this period, and was subjected to long stints of isolation, invasive procedures and medical check ins, and intensive training to both try and somewhat tame the beast inside of himself as well as hone it into a skilled and ruthless hunter. This went on for years (seven, he knows now that he’s free, and curls his lip every time he involuntarily thinks back to it). Unable to continue stomaching the nature of the missions and imprisonment he and his unit were subjected to, he finally snapped and went rogue during an assignment, managing to dodge the handlers and soldiers sent to recapture him and regaining his freedom in the process.Upon his escape he changed his name to the one he’s known by now- Ajax ‘Jax’ Gunn- in an effort to hide himself from the view of anyone involved with the program, and began traveling throughout the United States, never staying in one place for too long in fear of being tracked down. With no good source of income and no way to get a stable job, he resorted to underground work as an assassin and hitman, off of the mindset that, at that point and after all he’s been through, killing is the only real thing he knows he’s good at doing.

After eight years of living life on the run, however, fate finally caught up with him. During a self imposed mission to hunt down whoever was involved with the Program in the U.S. that he could find and wipe them off of the map, he was caught in a building collapse and killed- impaled straight through the chest with a metal support beam. His body was found some months later by Tristan Shaw and buried just a few ways away from the site of the collapse, but- unbeknownst to Tristan or anyone else- it was retrieved soon after by a group of scouts sent by Lykaion to scope out the damage done to their facility when they’d accidentally stumbled upon his grave.Curious if the body of one of their first subjects- though deteriorated as it was- could be of any use, the soldiers brought it back with them to one of Lykaion’s labs. Initially, it was thought that DNA could be retrieved from the body and used to buff up their original formula for their serum, but eventually their goal changed; seeing that the Program’s scientist had already created a serum that could turn a man into an unstoppable beast, what if they could do more? What if they could cheat death itself, and use the result to their advantage? So they set to work, using their original Lycan serum as a base for what would eventually be used to help kickstart Jax’s healing and regeneration abilities, and began the process of reanimation. After several transplants to replace his rotting organs and bits of flesh with healthier alternatives and multiple experiments with different variations of electroshock exposure, they’d finally achieved what they’d set out to do.Their new subject was stronger and more durable than before thanks to the reanimation serum, and, much to the delight of the Program’s higher-ups, a completely blank slate. Having woken up with no memories of his former life- not even who he was- he was the perfect starting point to become the Program’s deadliest secret weapon, with no risk of rebellion. Lykaion utilized this- putting him back into intensive training to reawaken his muscle memory in combat and weapons handling while feeding him placating lies about Lykaion's place in the world and the other old subjects that’d long since escaped, branding them as deserters in need of recapture and correction. They’d sent him when they’d felt he was ready on a retrieval mission meant to bring back what of the subjects he could so they could be reinstated, like him, back into the program, or be killed if they were to resist to keep from being a problem any longer, and Jax- eager for a fight and itching to spill blood- complied, up until a battle in Tristan Shaw’s apartment knocked a few old memories loose and had him hesitating to finish the job. After being locked by Tristan in the basement of an abandoned building for nearly a week to keep him in one place and prevent him from causing more harm, Jax- having spent the time bombarded with flashbacks and old memories- managed to pick apart a sort of sense of self from the shattered pieces of his mind, and, feeling horror and immense guilt over what he’d done to the one person he’d once sworn he’d never let himself hurt again, managed to slip out of his bonds from under Tristan’s nose and disappear into the night, hotwiring a car and using it to take him out of the city and back out of his pack’s- his family’s- lives. He’s spent the past several months since traveling the backroads of the country, stopping where he can to sleep and eat while contemplating his next move and coming somewhat to terms with who he is- where Jax Gunn ends and the monster begins; or, maybe, where they’re both one in the same- as his memories continue to flood back and fill in his missing gaps. He considers it a form of protection. For himself, but most importantly for the others, whom he feels he’s put into danger far too many times over the years to be acceptable any longer. He’s always been better on his own, anyway, he likes to think, but he knows- given his track record- this solitude isn’t a thing built to last.

Personality

At first meeting, the word one would usually use to describe Jax would be ‘cold’. Maybe even irritable, depending on the day- a gruffness and bluntness that’s only gotten worse since his resurrection at the hands of Lykaion. Not much of a people person, it takes a while for him to warm up to someone, preferring solitude for the safety of himself and others and as a result of his incredibly low sense of self worth- seeing himself as the kind of person who does nothing but hurt people, that’s not good for anyone else and, quite frankly, doesn't deserve to be- as well as having a short fuse that’s quick to spark in the face of company if he’s not really in the best of moods. He’s quiet about his pain- his motto for himself may as well be ‘swallow it down and deal with it’- and doesn’t enjoy letting his walls down or letting people in, and he can seem almost feral at times, like a wild animal. The beast peaking through his human façade.

He suffers from intense PTSD relating to events in his past; not only the trauma he suffered during his years involved with the lycanthrope program but also to a lesser extent from his active duty beforehand as an army veteran, and the constant high stress and high combat situations he’s found himself in over the years. His own lycanthropy can be somewhat seen as a trigger as well- many of the things he’s done attributed to the beast have left him scarred with feelings of guilt and repulsion over his actions, and he’s constantly battling with himself over the horror of what he does and what he’s become and that fact that some part of him, despite it all, enjoys it, and wonders if this is what he’s truly been, deep down inside,- what he was meant to be- all along. Because of this along with the training ingrained in him from back in his military days, he's in a constant state of vigilance over his surroundings and forever on the lookout for possible threats, giving him the appearance of someone almost always on edge and incredibly tense.Despite it, he has a soft side once he feels comfortable enough letting someone peek through his walls of steel, and becomes extremely attached to and protective over the ones he cares about. When he cares for someone, he cares with every inch of himself and will do whatever he can to keep them safe and feeling as good as they can, even if he doesn’t feel he deserves the same (which harkens back to the immense guilt he feels over the things he took part in and did, and honestly, still does both with his current line of work and because of the violent urges of his more beastly side, exacerbated by an anger he thinks he’s had in his bones since he was born.) If he feels he has the ability to help someone in need without the possibility of making things worse, he will, even if it means putting himself in harm's way.

Abilities

Slowed Aging Process: Due to the fast regenerative effects of the serum, Jax ages much slower than a normal human; he’s not immortal by any means, but a decade to his body is more of the equivalent of two years than ten. This enhanced cell replication and regeneration also gives him an extremely high metabolism, and factors into his enhanced healing as well as stamina and physical durability.Superior Strength: Thanks to the serum, Jax’s strength is far above that of a normal human male, allowing him to lift, throw and move extremely heavy objects with relative ease. This strength is doubled in his lycan form.Superhuman Durability: Jax’s body heals much faster than the average human thanks to quick cell regeneration, meaning cuts and scrapes are gone in minutes and heavy trauma is healed within hours or days. Of course, the bigger the injury the longer it will take to heal, and the more energy is used to heal it, usually leaving him exhausted and sluggish until his body gains back its strength. His body also produces less fatigue toxins than normal humans, which allows him to preform major feats of athleticism without growing tired (though, of course, he does still have his limits.) This is also enhanced in his lycan form.Superior Sight, Hearing and Smell: The animal DNA infused in the serum has granted Jax with senses rivalling that of a wolf, leaving him able to hear a noise or catch a scent from miles away, and giving him perfect 20/20 vision. He’s also able to see clearly in pitch black darkness. These senses are, like his strength, enhanced farther in his Lycan form.Master Hunter: His animal instincts and heavy training combined have turned him into the perfect predator, with stealth capabilities far beyond that of an average human both in his human and lycan forms, despite the larger size of the latter. He is able to track down and execute potential prey with ease, and his enhanced speed makes it even more difficult for whatever target he sets his sights on to get away.__Hand to Hand Combat__: Jax has received intensive hand-to-hand combat training at the hands of the U.S. army far before ever becoming a part of Project Lykaion, and this training was only amplified during his stint with the program. Because of this and his aforementioned strength, he is extremely lethal unarmed.Competence With Firearms: Already knowing how to shoot a gun thanks to his childhood growing up hunting in the backwoods of Virginia, his days in the military also brought with it weapons training, and from that came an even greater (and, in the words of one of his COs, like something that came naturally to him) proficiency. While he’s skilled in firearms of all kinds, he’s more comfortable with handguns and the like. He’s also skilled in the use of knives, though not as well as he is with guns or his bare hands.
